In early October, oil and gas company Repsol will begin exploratory drilling in the Canary Islands in an attempt to bolster the Spanish economy. Environmentalists and locals in Spain are calling foul on this practice, as the drilling could devastate not only the tourism economy, but also the rich population of whales and dolphins who call this place their home. Tell the Spanish government to stop this oil prospecting and instead create a sanctuary to protect these wild and majestic creatures.

The waters off of the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are jeopardized by oil drilling. One-third of the world’s cetacean species call this place home, and the possibility of an oil spill, loud noises, and contamination could devastate all species. A vast majority of Spanish citizens oppose oil drilling, stating their love for the environment and wildlife, and expressing concern toward tourism. In 2011, several whales in the region were found dead from noise pollution and other factors. These deaths inspired the environmental minister to pitch the idea of making the waters a protected sanctuary—an idea that has rallied many citizens.

Unfortunately, Spain’s own Supreme Court threw out many challenges, as the country is eager to jump-start its economy. Spain relies heavily on tourists to drive the economy, and while many citizens understand this, the government doesn’t seem to. Respol is trying to calm citizens, stating that it is only looking for oil in the area. If oil is found, Respol claims it will openly discuss what is to be done with concerned citizens and government officials.

Respol is only concerned with profits, but many citizens are concerned for their economy and the lives of whales. While the company can claim that it is merely looking for oil, it will no doubt pursue drilling if oil is found. Respol does not care for the whales and dolphins in the area, and it seems like the government doesn’t either. Urge the Prime Minister of Spain to stop oil prospecting, and instead create a sanctuary for whales and dolphins.

I been in the beautiful and wild Fuerteventura. Local people and associations have raised protests. Greenpeace told that the planned oil spill – located in deep waters, at 3000 meters – would required 500 boats to act immediately in order to contain it. Fuerteventura doesn’t have the structure to be able to defend itself immediately against such a disaster…   

Natalia Evora, Environment and Trasports Councillor in Fuerteventura, said to “Fuerteventura Magazine Hoy” : “First of all we must remember that in 21st Century we must speak of energies that do not pollute and we therefore think oil has become an obsolete industry… We must take into account the great damage and risks that this would create in our marine element, for biodiversity and for tourism…The Islands that are Biosphere Reserves, such as Fuerteventura, are creating another energy model and not one that is already being eliminated in many countries because of the problems it has created… An oil spill would immediately close the desalination plants that provide the water we consume”.

Dear Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy,

I urge you to stop oil prospecting in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. These waters are home to one-third of the world’s whales and dolphins, and if oil prospecting were to occur here, it would endanger their lives. Furthermore, oil drilling would hurt your nation’s economy, as it is mainly driven by tourism. If the whales and dolphins were to die because of the noise pollution and oil spills, it would no doubt cause severe harm for your nation’s economy.

Many of your citizens are against oil prospecting, and it baffles me that your Supreme Court would even consider backing this endeavor. While I understand that your economy is struggling, it does not give your government the right to harm living creatures. Consider the harm you will be doing not only to your whales and dolphins, but to the environment and your people if you pursue oil drilling.

These pictures aren’t paintings (oils, acrylics, watercolors or digital works), but just natural, random and not manipulated images of the amazing imperfection of the real world we see around us. I took them some days ago, during a rush-visit to Rome. Through these pics I tried to tell the sense of Caput Mundi: red as passion, yellow as history, black as power and its ghosts…

Education International has launched its first world-wide photo action, which is part of the campaign Unite for Quality Education. Its aim is to show the great scope of teaching and learning conditions that can be found in different countries and regions. The campaign wants to show the importance of quality education and the diverse situations that are found around the world, bringing to the fore the  learning and teaching community aspect. The pictures can either reflect the importance of teachers, of learning environments or of the teaching tools.

 I’m participating in this campaign with a picture I posted on Facebook:

MY PHOTO: VOTE FOR IT IF YOU LIKE IT

 

Its title is “ Arms of the Heart”. It shows students visiting my “Colors of an Apocalypse” exhibition at Aldobrandesca Fortress (XIII Century) in Siena country, Tuscany, Italy. I think in this picture we may catch some interesting elements about the “sense of learning today”. As you can see, there is a student who observes and another guy seems to watch in another direction… I focused my attention (and my camera) on the third one, at the centre of the scene. This student – perhaps with an unconventional gesture – wants to know, wants to touch and wants to find out about the art work on the wall… I think today’s world needs this kind of action: to put young people in the right situations to know and understand. As the photo shows, learning means not being afraid to throw up our arms and feel that life is everywhere and in everything.

Education International will select the photographs that best depict the elements described above and will aim to organize an exhibition at its headquarters in Brussels, coinciding with the culmination events of the campaign Unite for Quality Education and on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day on October 5th. Some of the pictures will also be part of a photo book that will be handed to UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon. The photo action will end with a raffle and the award of 3 iPad minis to the lucky participants!

I’m participating in “Education International photo-action” with the aim to support “Mt.Everest Top of the World Mission in Nepal” and its appeal to provide school supplies for 65 Orphans and Destitute Children of Western Nepal who are missing school because they cannot manage the necessary funding required. Rajendra Nhisutu, Chairman of Mt. Everest Tower Organization (an entirely volunteer based multi-denominational, non-governmental, non-profit association), is seeking help for school admission fees, books, stationary and uniforms. This campaign is also launched by Marysia Zipser, Founder  of UK based ACT GROUP (ART-CULTURE-TOURISM), voluntary community organisation in Beeston, Nottingham.

This is the review about my artworks “LACER/ACTIONS” recently wrote by a famous Italian critic, Lino Lazzari, journalist, writer, one of the historic leaders of art communication in Italy, author of essays and studies, including the monumental books about “Accademia Carrara”.

One of the fundamental principles of physics says: “In nature nothing is created, nothing is destroyed”. “Nothing is created” because each reality that is invented by men, comes from a pre-existing reality and “nothing is destroyed” because a reality defined as “destroyed” or ” consumed” it is actually “re-created” or converted, buying a whole new identity.

And that is what Roberto Alborghetti can do with posters that appear on walls or on the expositive spaces in the streets of our cities, “destroyed” by the time, or torn by unknown. The interest for those posters that, while being exhibited in public, clearly appeared, no longer exists…

THE SPECTACULAR FLOATING EXHIBITION OF HISTORICAL BOATS SAILING IN THE LEONARDESCO PORT CHANNEL IN CESENATICO (THE ONLY ONE IN ITALY)

 

 

In Cesenatico ( Adriatic Sea, Italy) the old sailing vessels of the Marine Museum are moored side by side with modern fishing boats which still punctuate with their time out of the Harbour, designed by Leonardo, on the docks where there is the city life. The old fish market, still active, just steps from the Piazzetta and preservation where fish was stored in the ancient and characteristic artifacts excavated in the soil.

Located near the ancient Roman settlement of Ad Novas, “Porto Cesenatico” was officially founded at the beginning of the fourteenth century, when Cesena dig a channel for berthing of boats and puts a rock in his defense. The seaport is becoming more important, thanks to the works performed during the Malatesta in the fifteenth century, to prevent the silting of the harbor.

The port channel runs through the center and houses historic boats, modern boats, fishing nets and cries of gulls, the voices of the sailors mingle in the life of the city in a place that can boast the title of Porto Leonardesco. The daily life still takes place mainly along the docks, and interwoven with references to the appearances of a maritime labor time and truly spectacular floating exhibition of historical boats sailing in the Maritime Museum, that of winter become home to one of the most unusual nativity of Italy.

The harbor was dug at the beginning of the fourteenth century, perhaps in the footsteps of an ancient port, was by then the subject of ongoing work by hydraulic engineers, among which we remember above all that of Leonardo da Vinci, who made a careful survey and a drawing in 1502 on behalf of Caesar Borgia, which aims to improve and strengthen it. Around the harbor is developed over time the town of Cesenatico, divided into two districts of the “Monte” and “Vlore”, with the fishermen’s houses, warehouses for goods, and canned fish. Ciceruacchio still visible in the square the perimeter of the Tower Pretoria, which once stood in defense of the raids of Barbary pirates and functions of the customs and maritime defense of healthcare.

In the heart of the historic center of Cesenatico, the harbor Leonardesco as a living museum and everything to see, which can also count on stable and qualified supply of a network of cultural institutions all located on its banks: the Maritime Museum, Casa Moretti, Antiquarian Hall.
In the most recent and most tract near the sea, the Port Channel branches off to the east, the Mazzarini vein, an artificial channel dug in the mid nineteenth century, with tree-lined shores, while to the west opens up the dock. Here, in the most inner basin, home to the marina, while in the outer basin (the “dog” for old sailors) there are tourist motorboats, a part of the fishing fleet, shipyards and maintenance services, and a modern slipway.

The “Floating Maritime Museum”, the only one in Italy, is located in the most ancient and characteristic feature of the port of Cesenatico. This synthesis of many centuries of maritime history: small and large events related to boats, fishing and maritime trade. Cesenatico from its origin until the economic upturn in tourism, is always identified with the port.
The floating section of the museum contains the prototypes of the boats and middle Adriatic, which in summer are still showing the colorful sails on the third decorated with symbols of the families of fishermen, who frequented the port of Cesenatico after the disappearance of the lateen sail and before the advent of motorization.

In the floor section of the Marine Museum are exhibited the navy, the tools to use, and are appropriately described the techniques of construction of the hulls and those used for the various types of fishing and sails for the maneuver. Cesenatico today, with its docks, canals, water veins and the Maritime Museum, evokes the harsh experiences of the human past, to teach present and future generations a way certainly more aware of life at sea.
