THE YEAR OF THE ROSES / MACRO PHOTOGRAPHS AND LIGHT TRANSPARENCY (#3)

We have seen in previous posts how the rose flower can offer different possibilities for fun and unique chromatic results in photo shooting. In this photogallery here are some macro photographs that highlight how the transparency of the ambient light can create shades.

The petals, in their lightness and fragility, act as an extraordinary filter that manages and coordinates the brightness of the exterior. It is a spectacle of colors for the eyes and the mind. The macro images produce and induce color effects that further enhance the beauty and peculiarity of a flower that has always enchanted poets, writers and … photographers.

As you know, considering the great interest in this photographic subject, together with my colleague blogger Marysia Zipser (ACT Group), we thought of proclaiming 2020 as the Year of the Roses. Yes, perhaps in reaction to this sad and particular moment that the world is going through. As if to say: after the thorns, here are the roses!

RECIPES FROM MY BOOK “EATING WITH POPE FRANCIS”(#4): PIEDMONTESE RISOTTO

The book “Eating with Pope Francis / Food in the life of Jorge Mario Bergoglio “ (A tavola con Papa Francesco, the original Italian title) which I had the honor to write, is not just a sort of food biography on a Pope who graduated in Food Chemistry and is very prepared on the dynamics of food preparation. The book is also a sort of singular “recipe book” that draws inspiration and reason mainly from the dishes that the future Pope had had the opportunity to prepare in Buenos Aires (Argentina) before to be elected Pope in 2013.

Highest rating for the book by Amazon customers

In the book 36 recipes are presented and illustrated with photos. I am happy to report a few of them. So, from today, I will propose those that, in my opinion, are considered the “historical” recipes, those that have marked moments and traits of life of Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

The book – with different titles according the different Countries where it has been published – is still available in bookstores, including online ones, like Amazon, where the book is collecting highest ratings by the readers.

Published in 14 Countries, in different languages, the book is divided into very topical issues, which concern environmental sustainability and actions against food waste. The various editions have 208 pages and over 250 photographs. The volume received the 2018 Bancarella Cucina Selection Award.

THE RECIPES WITH “CHEF FRANCIS” : PIEDMONTESE RISOTTO

Piedmontese risotto is another of the traditional dishes preferred by Jorge Mario Bergoglio. It refers above all, like the bagna cauda, to the family and piedmontese roots of the Bergoglio family, who settled first in the Langhe, then around Asti, at the Bricco Marmorito. In the book some unpublished testimonies are reported in this regard. The future Pope learned the recipe for the typical Piedmontese risotto from his grandparents, especially from his grandmother Rosa, much loved by her grandson, a combative and highly sensitive woman. This is also told in the book “Eating with Pope Francis”

Ingredients – 1 liter of vegetable broth, 1 onion, 40 g of butter, 250 g of Carnaroli rice, ½ glass of white wine, 4 tablespoons of grated Grana Padano cheese, salt to taste.

Preparation – Heat the broth, chop the onion and fry it in a pan with a knob of butter. Add the rice, toasting it for 2 minutes. Deglaze with the wine and add the broth gradually. After 15 minutes remove from the heat, season with salt and stir in a knob of butter and parmesan. Good risotto!

INSIDE THE ROUND COLLAGE OF THE “BLOOD MOON” (LUNA ROSSA)

At kind request, here are some close-up pictures of the “Blood Moon” (the Red Moon) collage (yesterday July 27th I posted the video). The collage has a diameter of 79 centimeters and was created on a round table, precisely to evoke the same shape as the moon. As in all my collage works, the artwork is all done with waste paper from torn and decomposed advertising posters.

The compositional process is articulated in the phase of de-construction of the paper material (collected at the billboards) and its re-composition in a unitary scene using small pieces of waste paper.

The theme of the round collage is dedicated to the red moon and its eclipse. I imagined that the Moon, the satellite that has always lived in symbiosis with the Earth (and the Earth with the Moon) in its becoming red vivified the Earth and gave it vitality, color, light and energy. I liked playing on the contrast between dark and light, between dark and colored papers, in a wave of colors that recalls the movement of the works of vorticism.

THE BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE (LUNA ROSSA): THE VIDEO PREMIERE

This is a surprise video: I mean that it was created to document an artwork that, planned a couple of years ago, has finally been completed in the last few weeks. As seen in the pictures, it presents a collage made on a round table with a diameter of 79 centimeters. As in all my collage works, it’s all done with waste paper from torn and decomposed advertising posters. The theme is dedicated to the red moon and its eclipse. I imagined that the Moon, the satellite that has always lived in symbiosis with the Earth (and the Earth with the Moon) in its becoming red vivified the Earth and gave it vitality, color, light and energy.

“RAINBOWS” VIDEO: A JOURNEY OF WONDER WITH THE VOICE OF JEANIE BARTON

“Rainbows” video is the third collaboration with jazz singer and composer Jeanie Barton. Her  wonderful voice goes with my abstract photos: colors of decomposed papers of torn publicity posters and natural cracks and scratches. “Rainbows” song is from the new album released by Jeanie: “Moments of Clarity”. I’m so proud about this clip which mixes and matches again Jeanie’s wonderful voice and music with my visual works; they aren’t paintings or digitally made compositions, but macro photos of reality around us.

Infos about the videoclip: “Rainbows” :  Composition and vocals by Jeanie Barton;  production by Simon Paterson; Photography and video by Roberto Alborghetti.

ABOUT MY LACER/ACTIONS PROJECT

“LaceR/Actions” is a multidisciplinary project and research about the apparent chaos of ripped and decomposed publicity posters, natural cracks, crevices, scratches and urban and industrial signs and tokens (during my research around the world  I  collected so far about 120.000 macro photos). Transferred on canvases, reproduced on lithographic prints or textiles (as pure silk), re-built on collages or scanned in videoclips, the macro images of torn and disfigured posters and natural cracks give new meanings and expressions to paper lacerations and matter decomposition.

Two of my solo shows was displaced at the Aldobrandesca Fortress (XIII Century) in Tuscany and at the Romanesque St. John Baptistery (XI Century) on Lake Como. In the last years I worked on these projects:  “Contemplations and Lacer/actions” (album, videoclip, installations, inspired by Thomas of Bergamo Scripts, 1563-1631), “Atelier of Colors and Emotions” (a project which involved autistic kids), “Lacer/actions on Aluminium” (11 installations for Fai Private Collection, Italy). My artworks are part of Contemporary Art Collection (Mercatello sul Metauro, Marche, Italy) and participating to “An Exhibition, a Restoration” in Norcia (Umbria, Italy). The amazing “Ghost Bus” project was carried out with Bartons Plc and Act Group, Beeston, Nottingham, UK, with lot of events including short films premieres and public conversations.

THE RECIPES WITH “CHEF FRANCIS” : “ASADO” (ARGENTINE ROAST)

Asado is one of the typical gastronomic proposals of Argentina: one of the favorite dishes of Jorge Mario Bergoglio. This is the typical Argentine roast, which he often prepared for the students of Colegio Màximo, the Jesuit training center of which Bergoglio was the rector. A dish very appreciated also by the confreres priests. In the book some unpublished testimonies are reported in this regard. Asado was the “main course” of the future Pope, who did not disdain to put himself in the kitchen of the college kitchen, when the cooks were resting or getting sick.

Ingredients: 2 kg of ribs of beef, 1 bunch of parsley, 2 bay leaves, 1 clove of garlic, vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, oregano, chilli pepper and coarse salt to taste

Preparation: Massage the meat with coarse salt. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes. Prepare the chimichurri sauce, a fundamental condiment: pound parsley, oregano, chilli pepper, bay leaf and garlic in a mortar. Add oil and vinegar. Asado requires long cooking, but it can be enough to cook the meat for about an hour and a half at 150 ° C. Pass the meat on the hot grill for 10 minutes. Serve together with the sauce.
