THE BEACH IS AN ART GALLERY: 20 BEAUTIFUL SUNSHELTERS FOR THE 16th EDITION OF “TENTS AT THE SEA” IN CESENATICO (ITALY)

The sunshades in the past were the typical furniture on the whole beach of Cesenatico (Adriatic Sea, Italy). Before the introduction of sun umbrellas, big rectangular tents were hung on wooden poles stuck in the sand, in order to give shelter to tourists on the beach. Thanks to the intuition of Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo, in Cesenatico (Riviera Adriatica, Italy) these sunshelters have become big canvases for painting on, giving life to a real and unusual open-air art exhibition and an enchanting scenery.

Visitors and tourists, until September 8, have the way to relax themselves under the pleasant shadow admiring fascinating pieces of art. Each year, the open-air exhibition of sunshades is dedicated to the works of a different artist: the first one was Dario Fo (1998), followed by Tono Zancanaro (2000), Emanuele Luzzati (2001), Bruno Munari (2003), Federico Fellini (2006). In 2011 the exhibition was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy, with works created by poet, author and screenwriter Tonino Guerra. Last year the tents at the sea were dedicated to  artist Ilario Fioravanti. This year, the 16th Edition of the Tents at the Sea Show is dedicated to another Cesenatico artist, Tonina Cianca who recently passed away. The twenty beautiful tents are waving under the sun on the public beach (in Andrea Costa square) next to Cesenatico’s skyscraper. The incredible exhibition continues until September 8, 2013.

VILLA CARLOTTA, WHERE ART AND NATURE MASTERPIECES LIVE TOGETHER IN A PLACE OF RARE BEAUTY

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo (Lake Como, Italy) is really a place of rare beauty, where masterpieces of nature and art live together in perfect harmony in over 70.000 square meters of gardens and museum.

The beautiful Villa was built at the end of 17th Century in a natural basin between lake and mountains, facing the dolomitic Grignas and the peninsula of Bellagio.

The architect created for the Clericis – a noble and powerful Milanese family – an important but sober building, with an Italian garden decorated with sculptures, stairs and fountains.

In 1801 Gian Battista Sommariva, famous politician, business man and patron of arts, bought the villa. Thanks to him, the villa attained the summit of its splendor and became one of the most important halting-place of the Grand Tour with its collections of art – as the masterpieces of Canova (Amore e Psiche), Thorvaldsen and Hayez – and its fascinating romantic garden.

In the Museum, at ground floor, we may visit the Marble Room, the Plasters Room, the Cameos Room, the Palamede Room, The Wicar Room, the Magdalene Room, the enchanting Eros and Psyche Room, the Romeo and Juliet Room, the Views Room, the Napoleonic Room. At the second floor, we admire the Gallery, Princess Carlotta bedroom, the Red Parlour, the Tapestry Room, the Empire Style Parlour, the Empire Style dining-room, Georg II Room and the bedroom.

In the second half of the Century Princess Marianne of Nassau bought the villa and gave it as a present to her daughter Carlotta in occasion of her wedding with Georg II of Saxe-Meningen. Georg was passionate about botany and made a lot of improvements and new additions to the park that became more and more famous for its botanical richness and the rhododendrons and azaleas spring flowering. They are more than 150 varieties giving an extraordinary flowering which is known all over the world.  In the park we may admire the beautiful Terrace and the Italian Gardens, The Camelias, the Theatre of Greenery, the Rock Garden, the Ferms Valley, the Azaleas, the Rhododendrons Wood, the Bamboos Garden, the Old Garden, the Museum of agricultural tools and a Tower (XIX Century).

The next Roberto Alborghetti Lacer/actions Show (“Colors of an Apocalypse – An Intrigue for the  Eyes and Mind from Decomposed Publicity Posters“) will take place in a wonderful and impressive location: the Rocca Aldobrandesca – a XIII Century fortress in Tuscany (Siena, Italy) – from October 6 to November 5, 2012. The exhibition is one of the most awaited Italian events of Fall 2012 and has been organized by Piancastagnaio Municipality and Siena Territory Communities and Osa Onlus.

There is a great expectation for this event: simply browse the site – www.robertoalborghetti.wordpress.com/ –  where there’s a page about the exhibition. The title couldn’t be more hit for this exceptional exhibition sponsored by the Municipality and Osa. Roberto Alborghetti will show forty artworks that symbolically represent the meaning of his artistic research, based on observation and reproduction of  one of the several “apocalypses” of our times, namely the decomposed and torn publicity posters we see on walls and along the streets. 

Roberto Alborghetti looks inside this great Babel of decomposed colors and words degraded by time, environment and humans. He draws chromatic energy from trash images, giving new life and reason to what is considered (for the eyes and the urban landscape) a rejection or a disturbing element. The historic  Piancastagnaio fortress, evoking the passage of times, offers an ideal space to enhance the contrasting language of colors and shapes of Roberto Alborghetti compositions.

The “Lacer /actions” Show will be accompanied by forums, workshops and videoshows created by Alborghetti. The exhibition will also feature a limited-edition of a three silk scarves series which Roberto Alborghetti produced in collaboration with renowned textile designer Bruno Boggia who worked with the most famous international fashion designers.              

But let’s know something more about this fascinating fortress, one of the most impressive Medieval Italian castles, a perfect location for Roberto Alborghetti artpieces. Since the 11th century the area of southern Tuscany around the castle of Piancastagnaio was the object of the expansionist politics of the powerful feudal family of the Aldobrandeschi. The whole territory is rich in historical remains tied to these potentates. Between the possessions of the Aldobrandeschi, Piancastagnaio was almost always the site of allotted to the noble family from the monks of the Abbey of S.Salvatore since the beginning of the year 1000. Subsequently it was claimed from the Viscounts of Campiglia and during the 13th century it became object of ulterior disputes between the cities of Siena and Orvieto.

The Orvietani gained control of the powerful fortress in the 1303 and maintained it for around fifty years. At this point they entered in the quarrel with the heirs of the Aldobrandeschi, the Orsini of Pitigliano, to       oppose the new aims of the Senese Republic. Only between the years 1415 and 1430 Siena finally succeeded to taking possession of Piancastagnaio,       that was attached to the Capitanato of Radicofani. In 17th century the settlement became a Granducal fief and finally, with the Leopoldine reforms, the chief town of the the same community.

The country town has a circular form, once had surrounding wall enclosure with alternating square towers and four gates. The walls and the gates       have been almost entirely demolished, with the exception of few lines, three towers, two with semicircular shape and the other squared, the main       city Gate beside the Rocca and other three minor Gates in the southern front of the walls: ‘Porta Romana’, ‘Porticciola’ e ‘Porta di Voltaia’.

In the highest point of the inhabited area rises still today the mighty Rocca Aldobrandesca. The construction has a square form and is endowed with tall and strongly inclined walls. From the enclosure rises two towers , the greatest, either as thickest, had functions of keep, the other, in the opposite angle,       defended the underlying gate of access to the city.

The whole complex was endowed with machicoulis and battlement, still today almost intact. The Rocca is under good condition thanks to careful work of  restoration.

Aloe Vera plants ( Aloe Barbadensis Miller) have found in Fuerteventura the best climatic conditions of the world for their development. Conditions I’m enjoying during my stay in  Fuerteventura: clear sunlight, warm climate and scarce rain. You may see Aloe Vera along roads, in the gardens and in several plantations grewed up in the inner areas.

Aloe Vera is a plant from the family of the liliaceous like tha garlic or the onion. It is known since the ancient time for its medical effects. The pulp inside contains a great variety of active principals such as vitamins, minerals and aminoacids. The Aloe Vera is recommended for all type of affections of the skin. Due to its regenerative action, in record time it accelerates the recuperation of the skin and eases the pain.

At the weekly “mercadillo” (market) in Morro Jable I bought “Aloe Vera Gel” from “Absolut Aloe”, one of the local producers (www.absolutaloe.com) . A bottle of 250 ml. contains the extract of about 625 gr.of fresh leaves. They cultivate aloe in an ecologic way and their plantations are controlled by the Regular Council for Ecologic Agriculture of the Canary Government. To ensure maximum quality they sell directly from the producer straight to the consumer. In Fuerteventura you find Aloe Vera products in every stores or shops. Before to buy them, check quality and origins.

About its effects I may say that my skin has received immediate relief after sunburn. And some friends of mine at last solved problems about sun allergies.

In Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) the Jandia peninsula was formed through one of three volcanic edifices that created the Island: the stratovolcano of Jandia.

Its emissions were very powerful and caused a widespread pilling up of lava flows that made up the most important terrains of the Island. The erosive agents are still re-modeling this terrain. The southern slope which starts at the Jandia mountain ridge is formed by a grouping of narrow, short and deep valleys that do not quite reach the sea.

In Fuerteventura, water makes and marks the different colours of landscapes. On an island where so rarely we have rains, water desalination plants ensure life, to inhabitants and to flora and vegetation. Other differences are made by the sea. Various local species are endemic to the Jandia peninsula meaning it is the region with most biodiversity in the entire island.

The area close to the lighthouse is inhabited by grouping of halophillic plants (extremophile organisms adapted to living in environments with high concentration of salt), such heath-leaved Sea-Heath and an antidiabetic medical plant (Plantigophyllum gaetulum) whose habitat is limited within the Canary Islands.

The Mosquito Valley has a good representation of other endemic species found only in the south of Fuerteventura and a plant symbol of the island, Jandia spurge (Euphorbia handiensis). A perennial shrub Launaea arborescens, Common Ice Plant, Canary Island tamarisks (Tamarix  canariensis), Poenix canariensis palm tree and the tree tobacco (also uncorrectly known as Mustard tree, Nicoriana glauca) all introduced to the island and can also be encountered along our routes.

MY ART GALLERY? IT’S ALONG AMSTERDAM STREETS

I been recently in Holland. I travelled along the country, from Brabant region to Amsterdam. I love the dutch landscapes, they’re so relaxing… I saw obviously  torn posters and other urban signs that I like to catch and to document for my “Lacer/actions” art project. It happened in Eindhoven, Utrecht and Leiden. And also along Amsterdam streets and canals I captured lot of images, absolutely realistic, as all the others 35.000 pics I collected so far.

I think the beautiful dutch city reveals itself also through ripped poster and ads you may see in hidden corners. You have only to keep up your attention and perception… I gathered interesting and capturing imageries that are really part of colors, shapes and moods of the so called “Venice of Northern Europe”.

So, here some of my artworks comin’ from my personal open air art gallery that I discovered and managed along Amsterdam streets. With a special series of other 6 images I’ve also created a videoclip – “Light (de)signs” – with the fascinating sound of Jap Jap, an Amsterdam based composer, musician, producer and performer (link below).

THE ARTISTIC MARINE CRIB ALONG THE CANAL PORT CREATED BY LEONARDO DA VINCI

 Cesenatico (Emilia Romagna, Italy): at Christmas time the boats of the floating section of the Marine Museum become the stage of an incredible crib on the water.

  

According to a research made some years ago by an international films company, it’s one of the most photographed Italian places. I’m talking about the artistic Crib on Water that we may admire in Cesenatico (Romagna Coast, Italy) during these weeks.

At Christmas time, from the first Sunday of December till the Epiphany, the boats of the floating section of the Marine Museum become the stage of the Marine Crib. The crib was created in 1986 and is the work of the artists Tinin Mantegazza, Maurizio Bertoni and Mino Savadori, from an original idea of Guerrino Gardini. The first statue sculpted was S. Giacomo, patron saint of Cesenatico, after that many other have been joined during the years. These are not only traditional statues, but characters inspired by the lives of ordinary people in a fishing village: fishermen, carpenters, puppeteers, fishmongers, a woman with the piadina (fleat bread), children and musicians.

Together with the Holy Family and the traditional shepherds, we can see someone who is mending his nets, leading the boats or selling fish; without neglecting singular particulars as the presence of a group of dolphins looking out the water with curiosity. The statues are life-size: faces, hands, feet and all exposed parts are etched in pine wood ; the clothes are made of cloth stiffened by the brushwork hot wax on wooden structures which have been strengthened throught a metal frame molded to desired shape. The result is a very effective scene, made more suggestive by the lights of the boats reflected on the water .

Each year a new statue is added to the Crib. From the 7 figures of the first edition in 1986, today the sculptural heritage includes fifty statues. The artists Bertoni and Savadori have been carrying out the project of equipping each boat with a skipper and a crew. The figures are thought as elements of a performance, that can be admired from the banks of the Leonardo Canal Port just like an audience. The atmosphere becomes magical at nightfall because thousands of lights give life to the figures.

CESENATICO E IL PRESEPE SULLE BARCHE DEL MUSEO DELLA MARINERIA

Cesenatico allestisce un Presepe che è unico al mondo: non ci sono grotte o capanne con i sentieri coperti di muschio, le cime innevate e le pecorelle al pascolo a fare da sfondo alla Natività, bensì Bragozzi, Battane, Lance, Trabaccoli Paranze e Barchét, le antiche e coloratissime imbarcazioni dell’alto e medio Adriatico. Nella romantica cornice del porto canale leonardesco le antiche imbarcazioni del Museo della Marineria ospitano la Sacra Famiglia, i Re Magi e tutti gli altri personaggi del presepe, e qui, accolto da tre delfini scolpiti, la notte di Natale, nascerà il Bambino. A fare da sfondo c’è la città con lo scorcio suggestivo delle antiche Conserve e delle case colorate che si specchiano nell’acqua del porto canale.

Il Presepe, iniziato nel 1986, è opera degli artisti Maurizio Bertoni e Mino Savadori su progetto di Tinin Mantegazza e da un’idea di Guerrino Gardini. La prima statua, dopo la sacra Famiglia e i Re Magi è stata quella di S. Giacomo, Patrono di Cesenatico. Nel corso degli anni se ne sono aggiunte altre che rappresentano personaggi e “scorci” di vita della marineria locale: il burattinaio con il suo teatrino, i pescatori, la piadinaia, il suonatore di fisarmonica, gli angeli. I volti, le mani, i piedi e tutte le parti esposte delle statue sono scolpiti in legno di cirmolo. Gli abiti sono realizzati in tela e i voluminosi drappeggi (modellati su un’intricata rete di metallo), sono ottenuti grazie ad uno strato di cera pennellata a caldo. I colori sono quelli con cui venivano tinte le vele e la cera è quella che serviva per ammorbidire il sartiame. Il risultato è di grande effetto ed è reso ancora più suggestivo dalle luci che avvolgono le imbarcazioni.

Quest’anno, tra l’altro, il Presepe galleggiante ha ricevuto il prestigioso riconoscimento “Patrimonio d’Italia per la tradizione”, conferitogli direttamente dal Ministero del Turismo per “la sua capacità di mantenere vivo il folklore e le tradizioni del territorio, pur rinnovandole ed adeguandole al mutamento dei tempi e trasformandole in attrattori turistici in grado di registrare una sempre più ampia e crescente partecipazione”.
L’inaugurazione del Presepe della Marineria ha avuto  luogo domenica 4 dicembre 2011 alle ore 17.30 e l’accensione delle luminarie che rivestono tutte le barche della marineria, è stata preceduta dal concerto degli alunni del 1° Circolo didattico di Cesenatico in “Adeste Fidelis”.

Il 4 dicembre è stato predisposto da Poste Italiane, uno speciale annullo filatelico dedicato al Presepe, mentre nei giorni festivi di dicembre e gennaio, al Museo della Marineria, sarà possibile acquistare la cartolina ricordo con l’annullo. Da vedere anche il Presepe delle Conserve (dal 11 dicembre 2011 al 6 gennaio 2012), più tradizionale e collocato nella suggestiva piazzetta dove si possono ammirare le antiche Conserve (o ghiacciaie) che, riempite con ghiaccio o neve, avevano la funzione di conservare il pesce.

Ogni fine settimana, per tutto il periodo delle festività  nel centro storico, verranno organizzati mercatini di Natale (8-10-11-17-18-26 dicembre e 1-6-7-8 gennaio), spettacoli per grandi e piccini, musica, giochi, animazione e, la notte di Capodanno, appuntamento da non perdere con Capodanno sul Porto, per salutare insieme l’arrivo del nuovo anno all’insegna della buona musica , dell’allegria e del divertimento, con un grande concerto della Dino Gnassi Corporation Band in Piazza Ciceruacchio e lo splendido spettacolo di fuochi d’artificio  sul Porto canale leonardesco.

THAT MAGICAL CRYPT IN THE TUSCANY MEDIEVAL VILLAGE WHERE THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE WAS BORN

Abbadia San Salvatore, on Amiata Mount (Siena area, Tuscany, Italy) is a place rich of art and history… 

 

In Abbadia San Salvatore, on Amiata MountSiena area, Tuscany, Italy – there is a magical and capturing place. You find it on the ancient abbey church. It is a crypt, where you may breath the history and the beauty of one of the most fascinating Tuscany village.

According the documents, the crypt was built in VIII Century. It was restored in XX Century and now we may admire it in all its beauty. Everytime I have the way to visit it, I always feel astonished by its magic. It happened again a few days ago, when I was in Abbadia SS. for the XIII edition of “Penne and Video Sconosciuti”, the national festival for school journals and videos produced by italian schools.

The Longobard crypt shows 32 columns that form 13 small aisles. They are made in various shapes; some of them are round, with different sculpured ornaments. Also the beautiful capitals are sculptured in various shapes, as palm leaves, loto flowers or animal heads.

 

The abbey and all the Medieval centreare telling us how Abbadia San Salvatore was important in the past. All its area is rich in history and traditions, that to a great extent can be found in documents in the old archive belonging to the monastery dedicated to the Saviour at Amiata Mount. The archive contains many references to the importance and power of the abbey, but little or no reference is made to the early Medieval history of the surrounding land and area, or about the people who used to live there.

The castle of Abbadia is first mentioned in a document dating to 1203, which shows that the community was came under the aegis of a communal hierarchy headed by a Podestà, under the political control of Orvieto. A few years later, the strenght and power of this communal organization are described in the “bill of freedom” (“carta delle libertà”) granted in 1212 to communal chancellors by the Abbot of the San Salvatore monastery.

The pattern of settlements in the area of Abbadia was defined around the mid-XII Century, when under the pressure of external threats, the local population, up until then scattered over the surrounding countryside, came together within one large fortified settlement.

 

This Benedectine monastery was founded by Erfo, a Longobard nobleman, in the VIII Century, under King Astolfo, and it was dedicated to the Saviour, which was typical of that people and in the tradition of christian religion. It rose on the east side of Amiata Mount in order to reclaim the surrounding woods and forests. It also overlooked the Via Francigena, running through the Paglia Valley.

The imperial abbey greatly developed in the Carolingian period thanks to Charlemagne‘s and Ludovick‘s confirmation of its landed propertues and privileges, Around the year 1000, under Abbot Winizo, it increased its power by acquiring new territories. The church and the crypt were rebuilt in 1036. In 1228 the monastery passed to the Cistercians. It was suppressed by grand-duke Pietro Leopoldo in 1782 and re-opened later.

 

In the year 1087, a certain Miciarello and his wife Gualdrada made a donation in favour of the monastery of St Saviour. Below the donation document, the notary Ranieri signed three verses, commonly known as “Cartula Amiatina” (“The Amiata Footnote”). This extemporary poem represents to linguists the first voice of vernacular coming from Tuscany. That is, the first expressions recording the evolution of the Italian language.

But this is not the only important document about Amiata History. Till XIX Century, the monastery hosted the famous “Bibbia Amiatina”“The Amiata Bible” – which is considered the oldest latin version ever known. The Amiata Bible – a real art masterpiece, written by amanuensis monks – is now kept in Florence, but we may see a photo-reproduction in the Monastery Museum.

The historical centre is a well kept fortress-village, where you may walk through incredible narrow streets and squares, all built with the local grey stone. You may admire the Servadio Theatre (1873), a tiny but fascinating place. It was built thanks to the initiative of the Carli and Gragnoli families; it is dedicated to Giacomo Servadio (XIX Century) a Florentine member of Italian Parliament, banker, musician and theatre producer. Between the end of XIX Century and the beginning of the XX, the building was the seat of a friendly Society of the workers of Abbadia, where in XIX Century quicksilver mines began their activities, now closed and presented in a museum.

THAT CHARMING “PORT CHANNEL” DESIGNED BY LEONARDO DA VINCI

CESENATICO (Adriatic Riviera, Italy) is a nice and historical resort city on the Riviera Adriatica. Here, the old fish market, still active, is within walking distance from the modern wholesale market. Here, the old sailing ships stand side by side with modern fishing boats. You may find them on the beautiful and ancient harbor designed by the genius of the great Leonardo Da Vinci.

The so called Porto Canale ( Port Channel) is the main axis of the old town. On the docks still takes place social life and it’s one of the visitors favorite sites. The Port, however, is also the main historical monument of the city, which follows the lines drawn by Leonardo da Vinci (1502). Along the harbor, you may visit the Maritime Museum and the Moretti House.

On the Channel, there is a floating section of the Museum. Here incredible under sails old boats are on permanent show. Every boat exhibits different designs. It’s a spectacular scenary, to be seen also during the night time. In Piazza Pisacane you admire the monument dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi (who stayed in Cesenatico, with his wife Anita). In the large square Ciceruacchio there ‘re still on the ground the traces of an ancient tower that once guarded the port from the pirates attacks. Nearer the sea, close to the lighthouse, the massive doors now are defending the town from seastorms: it’s a modern technology project reproduced on the example of Leonardo ‘s intuitions.


The picturesque Piazzetta delle Conserve, located in the heart of the city, owes its name to the buildings excavated in the ground – preserves – where was placed the fish mashed up with snow and ice. That it was an intelligent solution to preserve fish for a long time, before the invention of refrigerators.

CESENATICO: COLORI E SORPRESE SUL PORTO CANALE DISEGNATO DA LEONARDO

A Cesenatico le testimonianze storiche e della tradizione marinaresca vivono intrecciate con la realtà di una moderna località turistica. Le antiche imbarcazioni a vela sono ormeggiate fianco a fianco con i moderni motopescherecci, che ritmano ancora con le loro uscite i tempi del Porto Canale disegnato da Leonardo, e la vecchia Pescheria, ancora attiva, è a pochi passi dal moderno Mercato all’ingrosso del pesce.
Il Porto Canale Leonardesco è l’asse principale del centro storico di Cesenatico, sulle cui banchine si svolge ancora la vita sociale e la passeggiata di cittadini e turisti. Il Porto tuttavia è anche il principale monumento storico della città, che ricalca le linee disegnate da Leonardo da Vinci, chiamato nel 1502 a suggerire interventi migliorativi all’approdo preesistente.

Lungo il porto, oltre a Museo della Marineria, Antiquarium, Casa Moretti, si trova la piazza Pisacane con il monumento a Giuseppe Garibaldi e la sua solenne iscrizione, la vecchia Pescheria, e poi l’ampia piazza Ciceruacchio, dove è tracciato ancora il perimetro dell’antica Torre Pretoria che un tempo difendeva il porto dalle fuste dei pirati barbareschi. Più vicino al mare, nei pressi del faro, le imponenti porte vinciane difendono oggi il centro abitato dalle mareggiate: una realizzazione di moderna tecnologia condotta sull’esempio dei progetti leonardeschi.


La suggestiva Piazzetta delle Conserve, situata nel cuore del centro storico, deve il suo nome alle costruzioni scavate nel terreno – le conserve – dove il pesce, disposto a strati alternati a neve e ghiaccio pressato raccolto durante l’inverno, poteva conservarsi per lungo tempo ben prima dell’invenzione dei frigoriferi. Quattro di questi antichi manufatti, che sorgevano numerosi nel quartiere detto “il Monte” per la sua pozione rialzata, sono stati restaurati e sono ora ben visibili insieme alla parte superiore di un’altra conserva ancora interrata.
