MY BEST WISHES WITH THIS SPECIAL “HAIGA”

Dark night

Snowflakes and frost

Before the New Day

Notte scura

Fiocchi di neve e gelo

Prima del Giorno Nuovo

This Season’s Greetings card fuses, in an “Haiga”, words (“Haiku”) and visual art. The image (lithograph, 50×70) is part of “Lacer/actions” collection, concerning my research about torn posters and urban signs. I thank my “haiga” teacher: poet, musician and producer Joshua Sellers, from West Memphis (Arkansas, Usa).

 ABOUT HAIGA

Haiga is a style of Japanese painting based on the aesthetics of haikai, from which haiku poetry derives, which often accompanied such poems in a single piece. Like the poetic forms it accompanied, haiga was based on simple, yet often profound, observations of the everyday world. Stephen Addiss points out that “since they are both created with the same brush and ink, adding an image to a haiku poem was… a natural activity.”

Just as haiku often internally juxtapose two images, haiga may also contain a juxtaposition between the haiku itself and the art work. The art work does not necessarily directly represent the images presented in the haiku. Stylistically, haiga vary widely based on the preferences and training of the individual painter, but generally show influences of formal Kanō school painting, minimalist Zen painting, and Ōtsu-e, while sharing much of the aesthetic attitudes of the nanga tradition. Some were reproduced as woodblock prints. The subjects painted likewise vary widely, but are generally elements mentioned in the calligraphy, or poetic images which add meaning or depth to that expressed by the poem.

SWEET P, THE STORY OF THE L.A. GUY WHO DREAMS TO ENTERTAIN THE WORLD…

IT’s out “Super Bad”, the new album “very carefully produced, composed, written, arranged, engineered, mixed and mastered” by Sweet P The Entertainer. I met him in June 2009 along the Walk of Fame. He was offering his demo cd to tourists… A story from the Dreaming America and from the Dreams that come True.

This is a story of a guy who dreamed to have a place in the music world. His name is Sweet P The Entertainer: “and he’s just what his name embodies”, he loves to say of himself.

I met him in june 2009, in Los Angeles, along the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A destiny’s sign? Yes, I think so. As other guys – singers, composers and musicians – he was running after tourists, offering them a demo cd with his music. He kindly stopped me and talked me about his compilation album – 16 tracks – home produced, home recorded and home manufactured. I remember what he said me : “Trust me, I’m the hottest music producer around here. This album home made is a tight blend of hip-hop, r’n’b, pop, rock and latin…All music is produced by me…Trust me”. I trusted my gut, as psychiatrist and Harvard clinician dr. Srini Pillay says about the role of intuition in his “The Brain and Business” book. I bought the compilation for some dollars. That guy thanked me smiling: “I’m the new Michael Jackson!”

It was June 2009 ( I had just left LA and I heard the sad news about the King of Pop’s death…) Back home, I put the compilation on cd player. That guy was right! Good hip-hop music. Nice vocal production. Beautiful rhythms and melodies. Accurate additional programming. A soulful atmosphere colored by a touch of pop and latin too. I contacted him via e-mail and I expressed my compliments.

The official biography – so ironical and disenchanted – tells about him: “ He’s a very well rounded Artist & Musician. He produces & engineers his own music, writes his own songs as well as sings & raps all the vocals. He plays several instruments including acoustic piano and acoustic guitar and is an electrifying performer on stage! Sweet P’s not only a great musician but he’s also an highly accomplished business man as well! He’s established himself as CEO of his own independent record label entitled “Rich Dreams Music” and does all of the promotion, marketing and management work himself on as well as off the internet! Please enjoy all of Sweet P’s videos and look for his new album coming this Summer/Fall…Thanks for your support, Stay Gold! Peace”.

From then, we kept in touch through web sites (Myspace, Youtube, Facebook). Sweet P has been updating me about the preparation of his album. He worked so much. He suffered so much. But he never gave up. He likes to say about himself: “They didn’t believe in me but I believed in myself!” Bold and tenacious. He really deserves attention and respect, for his faith, for his enthusiasm.

Sweet P was impressed by my “psycho artworks” and we had a sort of video collaboration. In 2010 he sent me an abstract from his “Sweet P Lean” mixtape and I created a clip, ispired by his soundtrack. The result was a video, “(HIP) POP”, showing ten pop-oriented images; it intended to be also a sort of homage to the great pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997).

And at last… A few days ago I receive this message: “Hey friends and fans it’s Sweet P The Entertainer! My new album will be soon available… It was very carefully produced, composed, written, arranged, engineered, mixed and mastered by myself and the first single & video is coming soon! In the meantime you can download my 8 song mix-tape for free on the datpiff link below and please feel free to share it with all of your close friends! My single from that mix-tape is entitled “Hey Girl”. You can check it out on my youtube channel as well. So thanks in advance for the support! Stay Gold, Peace. Sweet P The Entertainer”.

Well done, guy! I’m glad for you… Your dreams came true. I wish you all the best success! Yes, touching stories may born along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where people still hope and dream…

THAT STRANGE COINCIDENCE OF “SHAKUHACHI” AND “LINGER”…

Joshua Sellers, composer and producer based in West Memphis, posted me this message:

I had to share this funny (and pleasing) coincidence with you. Searching on YouTube for shakuhachi music, I came across a shakuhachi player Ninjutsu (far more disciplined than me!) who has recorded some wonderful music which I just downloaded from iTunes. But what was funny was that the top video he listed under his favourites on his YouTube page is our video for “Linger”! What a strange coincidence! LOL! I just had to share that odd discovery with you :-)”

Thanks Josh for sharing this curious coincidence: how small the web (and the world) are. On his Riverflow blog, Joshua explained what “shakuhachi” is. It is a Japanese end-blown flute. It is traditionally made of bamboo, but versions now exist in ABS and hardwoods. It was used by the monks of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism in the practice of suizen (吹禅?, blowing meditation). Its soulful sound made it popular in 1980s pop music in the English-speaking world.

FROM TORN POSTERS TO SILK SCARVES

My Lacer/actions artworks also transformed in textiles designs.

The dirty and torn papers of the advertisings posted on the walls of our cities have now become silk scarves too! After to be already transferred on canvas, lithographies and videoclips, my “Lacer/actions” artworks were transformed in silk textiles thanks to collaboration of Bruno Boggia Studio (Como, Italy) who for over sixty years has been working with the most famous designers and fashion brands in the world (Capucci, Lacroix, Valentino, Lancetti, Mila Schon, Chanel, Celine, Dior, Y.S.L., Etro, Escada, Donna Karan, Paul Smith, Rolando Santana…).

Bruno Boggia, with the invaluable assistance of his daughter Lucia, and with the support of his staff, helped me in the selection of artworks to be converted into silk scarves. And so, within a few days, the challenge reached the finish line. The images of that dirty and ripped paper have changed now in the elegance, delicacy and sheen of silk scarves.

The photographs of a couple of scarves, reproduced in this page, they are going to demonstrate it. Images about ripped and dirty advertisings, left to decompose on the walls or billboards, are now soft silk scarves, ready to be worn.

“S.O.S / StopOilSpill”: MY ARTWORKS AGAINST OFFSHORE OIL RIG ACTIVITIES

The clip wants to support the european “campaign” of Surfrider Foundation Europe  for the adoption of a moratorium on all new European offshore oil rig activities.

My “Lacer/Actions” against oil spill disasters. A videoclip based on my artworks wants to be a message about what has happened in Gulf of Mexico and in other places of the world. Nine images – selected from my pictures of torn ad billboards – meet the sound of Pure Dream Ladder.

Title of clip: S.O.S – StopOilSpill. Time: 32 seconds. Ripped and torn papers of ad billboards want to tell when “…the Sea Waters rose and screamed all their fury” against who are destroying our planet… An SOS to stop oil spills in our seas.

The clip wants to encourage the european “campaign” to demand the adoption of a moratorium on all new European offshore oil rig activities. This activity is promoted by Surfrider Foundation Europe. “A number of measures – says Surfrider – are urgently required for existing oil-drilling rigs, namely comprehensive regulations that would eliminate waste and chemical disposal from offshore oil-drilling rigs, impose stringent safety measures capable of preventing oil spill risks and limiting of greenhouse gas emissions by these installations. For these reasons, we state unequivocally that renewable sources of energy must be systematically prioritized over fossil fuels. Our sole demand: Stop Oil Spill!”

RIPPED COLORS OF “LACER/ACTIONS”

I’m Roberto Alborghetti, journalist, writer, photographer and visual artist. It has been a long time that I works on my project named “Lacer/Actions”, a research concerning ripped advertisings, torn papers and torn posters. I have taken thousands of pictures from city walls all over the world. Abstract and visionary images become art works, reproduced on canvas or other materials (textiles, paper, glass…) I think it’s a new “dimension of colors” that invites us to discover that in the reality “we may see things that we don’t even imagine”. In fact we find it difficult to think that behind faded and torn messages there may still be “something” to be seen or discovered. But these lacerated images continue to be a mirror of the talking city. For me, in the lacerated advertisings is recognizable the “unwrapped” city, self-destroying in the messages, self-regenerating and self-reproducing in new visual elements, often contradictory, dissonant, discordant, but still surprisingly vital.

Some of my “Lacer/Actions” artworks were shown in a booklet-portfolio that collects a very little selection of the images (about 30.000) that I took till…today. I’m also invited to lead workshops about my artworks. In July 2010, thirty thousand people visited my showcase “The Four Elements of LaceR/Actions” during the three days exhibition at Oriocenter (Milano Bergamo Orio Airport). My artworks are also taking part of experiences about sensorial and emotional perception (sinestesys) concerning kinesiologic tests.

I’m here, to share my adventure with you…
