TUSCANY: THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS, AMAZING SET OF “THE PRINCESS” e-BOOK AND SHORT FILM

the PRINCESS COVERLet’s know something about the fascinating Aldobrandesca Fortress, one of the most impressive Medieval Italian castles, amazing setting for the making of “The Princess, the Fire and the Castle” short movie and the e-book created by Roberto Alborghetti-Mitrani Yarden, in online bookstores and in  Hopes Store  at only 0.99 Euro.

Since the 11th century the area of southern Tuscany around the castle of Piancastagnaio was the object of the expansionist politics of the powerful feudal family of theAldobrandeschi. The whole territory is rich in historical remains tied to these potentates. Between the possessions of the Aldobrandeschi, Piancastagnaio was almost always the site of allotted to the noble family from the monks of the Abbey of S.Salvatore since the beginning of the year 1000. Subsequently it was claimed from the Viscounts of Campiglia and during the 13th century it became object of ulterior disputes between the cities of Siena and Orvieto.

The Orvietani gained control of the powerful fortress in the 1303 and maintained it for around fifty years. At this point they entered in the quarrel with the heirs of the Aldobrandeschi, the Orsini of Pitigliano, to       oppose the new aims of the Senese Republic. Only between the years 1415 and 1430 Siena finally succeeded to taking possession of Piancastagnaio,       that was attached to the Capitanato ofRadicofani. In 17th century the settlement became a Granducal fief and finally, with the Leopoldine reforms, the chief town of the the same community.

The country town has a circular form, once had surrounding wall enclosure with alternating square towers and four gates. The walls and the gates       have been almost entirely demolished, with the exception of few lines, three towers, two with semicircular shape and the other squared, the main       city Gate beside the Rocca and other three minor Gates in the southern front of the walls: ‘Porta Romana’, ‘Porticciola’ e ‘Porta di Voltaia’.

In the highest point of the inhabited area rises still today the mighty Rocca Aldobrandesca. The construction has a square form and is endowed with tall and strongly inclined walls. From the enclosure rises two towers , the greatest, either as thickest, had functions of keep, the other, in the opposite angle, defended the underlying gate of access to the city.

The whole complex was endowed with machicoulis and battlement, still today almost intact. The Rocca is under good condition thanks to careful work of  restoration.

THE GHOST BUS / FEEDBACKS: “AN EXTREMELY EXCITING PROJECT” (MELVYN RAWLINSON, ACTOR, DESIGNER, DIRECTOR, PUPPETEER)

b DSCN0006 (640x480)  For what it’s worth, may I be so presumptuous to share a thought. I think the Ghost Bus Project is about Time.

So often it is time which robs us of our memories and our faculties: to be able to function in the same way we once were able to. The archive film gives us back those memories, a glimpse of the past. But the bus itself has also travelled through time, and like its passengers has also been robbed of many of its faculties. Yet time is also our travelling companion as it takes us on a journey to discover what lies beneath the outer surfaces. Time is stripping back the layers to reveal other landscapes in a different dimension. It’s as if time is moving in two directions and where the two cross is where you find the Ghost Bus. It’s a curious contradiction. In this instance, the bus is the zeitgeist, the receptacle from which these images and emotions spring.

b DSCN0014 (640x480)

There were all sort of secondary thoughts about Roberto’s images not being abstract because they’re not abstracted from anything; they are an honest representation of what already exists, if only we take the time to look – so if anything they are extracted images. I guess in some ways we’re already aware of archive footage and even Roberto’s images, however beautiful even mesmerising, seem familiar. Yet the bus is different. To my mind the bus is the star and deserves to be at the heart of the installation and I’m not sure the films and the music should be experienced as separate fragments but more as facets of the central jewel – The Ghost Bus. I think it’s an extremely exciting project and I envy you all!

As a lone film maker – and a part-time one at that – and as a performer I really appreciate the hard work which was needed to get to the point of last Friday’s presentation. It was a brilliant evening and full of images and emotions which will stay with me for a long time. There’s so much potential there I’m sure you’re going to have great fun exploring the project even further. And I don’t need to tell you of the amazing resource you have right in the heart of Beeston and I raise my hat to you and your small team who achieve so much.

MY PHOTO TELLIN’ “THE GREAT SCOPE OF LEARNING” AND SUPPORTIN’ SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR 65 ORPHANS AND DESTITUTE CHILDREN IN NEPAL MISSION

VOTE IT FOR "PHOTO-ACTIONS". Students visiting Roberto Alborghetti's "Colors of an Apocalypse" exhibition at Aldobrandesca Fortress (XIII Century) in Tuscany (Piancastagnaio, Siena) Italy

Vote for it… Students visiting Roberto Alborghetti’s “Colors of an Apocalypse” exhibition at Aldobrandesca Fortress (XIII Century) in Tuscany (Piancastagnaio, Siena) Italy

Education International has launched its first world-wide photo action, which is part of the campaign Unite for Quality Education. Its aim is to show the great scope of teaching and learning conditions that can be found in different countries and regions. The campaign wants to show the importance of quality education and the diverse situations that are found around the world, bringing to the fore the  learning and teaching community aspect. The pictures can either reflect the importance of teachers, of learning environments or of the teaching tools.

I’m participating in this campaign with a picture I posted on Facebook:

MY PHOTO: VOTE FOR IT IF YOU LIKE IT

Its title is “ Arms of the Heart”. It shows students visiting my “Colors of an Apocalypse” exhibition at Aldobrandesca Fortress (XIII Century) in Siena country, Tuscany, Italy. I think in this picture we may catch some interesting elements about the “sense of learning today”. As you can see, there is a student who observes and another guy seems to watch in another direction… I focused my attention (and my camera) on the third one, at the centre of the scene. This student – perhaps with an unconventional gesture – wants to know, wants to touch and wants to find out about the art work on the wall… I think today’s world needs this kind of action: to put young people in the right situations to know and understand. As the photo shows, learning means not being afraid to throw up our arms and feel that life is everywhere and in everything.

Education International will select the photographs that best depict the elements described above and will aim to organize an exhibition at its headquarters in Brussels, coinciding with the culmination events of the campaign Unite for Quality Education and on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day on October 5th. Some of the pictures will also be part of a photo book that will be handed to UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon. The photo action will end with a raffle and the award of 3 iPad minis to the lucky participants!

I’m participating in “Education International photo-action” with the aim to support “Mt.Everest Top of the World Mission in Nepal” and its appeal to provide school supplies for 65 Orphans and Destitute Children of Western Nepal who are missing school because they cannot manage the necessary funding required. Rajendra Nhisutu, Chairman of Mt. Everest Tower Organization (an entirely volunteer based multi-denominational, non-governmental, non-profit association), is seeking help for school admission fees, books, stationary and uniforms. For info, see its website: http://www.mission2nepal.org/

This campaign is also launched by Marysia Zipser, Founder  of UK based ACT GROUP (ART-CULTURE-TOURISM), voluntary community organisation in Beeston, Nottingham.

If my ways are lucky enough to win the photo-action contest, I’ll donate the iPad to Mt. Everest Tower Organization for the 65 Orphans and Destitute Children of Western Nepal in need of school supplies. So, please, vote for my picture if you want this dream to come true…
