This artpiece is dedicated to architect and friend Gian Paolo Biffi, who passed away in these days. I’m grateful to him for his passionate profession, his enthusiasm and his personal support to my art. He was one of the first who pushed me to develop and promote my art research and activities. He curated my “ The Four Elements” Exhibition in 2009 and his installation – a particular  scaffolding used in building yards – was really something innovative and intriguing for modern art shows. He was also pleased to give me some suggestions for my next exhibition in the great Medieval Tuscany Fortress. But a desease caught him too early. Now he’s in the Great Clear Sky, as suggested by this artpiece which was owned by him…

Roberto Alborghetti ‘s LaceR/Actions is a multidisciplinary project and research about the apparent chaos of ripped and decomposed posters and urban/street signs.

Transferred on canvas, reproduced on lithographs or textiles (as pure silk), or scanned in videoclips, the details of torn posters give new life to paper lacerations and decomposition, as you may see in this “postcard” reproducing one of the 40.000 images captured by Roberto Alborghetti during his research all around the world.

His next big show (“Colors of an Apocalypse: An Intrigue for the Eyes and Mind from the Decomposed Publicity Posters”) will take place at Aldobrandesca Fortress (XIII Century) in Tuscany, from September 27 to November 4, 2012 .

Questa composizione  è dedicata all’architetto ed amico Gian Paolo Biffi, scomparso in questi giorni. Gli sono grato per la sua professione appassionata, il suo entusiasmo e il suo sostegno personale alla mia arte. Fu uno dei primi che mi ha spinto a sviluppare e promuovere la mia ricerca e le attività artistiche. Ha curato la mia mostra “I quattro elementi” (2009) e la sua installazione – un ponteggio particolare utilizzato nei cantieri edili – è stato davvero qualcosa di innovativo e intrigante per le mostre di arte moderna. Era anche felice di darmi qualche suggerimento per la mia prossima mostra nella grande fortezza medievale in Toscana. Ma una malattia lo ha preso prematuramente. Ora è nel grande cielo chiaro, come suggerito da questa composizione che era di sua  proprietà

Roberto Alborghetti  Lacer / Azioni è un progetto multidisciplinare e di ricerca sull’apparente caos dei manifesti pubblicitari strappati e decomposti e dei segni di strada.

 Transferite su tela, litografie o riprodotti su tessuti (come seta pura), o acquisiti in videoclips, i dettagli dei manifesti strappati danno nuova vita alla carta lacerata e decomposta, come si può vedere in questa “cartolina” che riproduce una delle 40.000 immagini catturate da Roberto Alborghetti durante la sua ricerca in tutto il mondo.

La sua prossima mostra ( “Colori di un’ Apocalisse / I manifesti pubblicitari decomposti: una provocazione per gli occhi e la mente” ) si svolgerà presso la Rocca Aldobrandesca (XIII secolo, Paincastagnaio, Siena) in Toscana, dal 27 settembre al 4 novembre 2012.

The next Roberto Alborghetti Lacer/actions Show (“Colors of an Apocalypse – An Intrigue for the  Eyes and Mind from Decomposed Publicity Posters“) will take place in a wonderful and impressive location: the Rocca Aldobrandesca – a XIII Century fortress in Tuscany (Siena, Italy) – from October 6 to November 5, 2012. The exhibition is one of the most awaited Italian events of Fall 2012 and has been organized by Piancastagnaio Municipality and Siena Territory Communities and Osa Onlus.

There is a great expectation for this event: simply browse the site – www.robertoalborghetti.wordpress.com/ –  where there’s a page about the exhibition. The title couldn’t be more hit for this exceptional exhibition sponsored by the Municipality and Osa. Roberto Alborghetti will show forty artworks that symbolically represent the meaning of his artistic research, based on observation and reproduction of  one of the several “apocalypses” of our times, namely the decomposed and torn publicity posters we see on walls and along the streets. 

Roberto Alborghetti looks inside this great Babel of decomposed colors and words degraded by time, environment and humans. He draws chromatic energy from trash images, giving new life and reason to what is considered (for the eyes and the urban landscape) a rejection or a disturbing element. The historic  Piancastagnaio fortress, evoking the passage of times, offers an ideal space to enhance the contrasting language of colors and shapes of Roberto Alborghetti compositions.

The “Lacer /actions” Show will be accompanied by forums, workshops and videoshows created by Alborghetti. The exhibition will also feature a limited-edition of a three silk scarves series which Roberto Alborghetti produced in collaboration with renowned textile designer Bruno Boggia who worked with the most famous international fashion designers.              

But let’s know something more about this fascinating fortress, one of the most impressive Medieval Italian castles, a perfect location for Roberto Alborghetti artpieces. Since the 11th century the area of southern Tuscany around the castle of Piancastagnaio was the object of the expansionist politics of the powerful feudal family of the Aldobrandeschi. The whole territory is rich in historical remains tied to these potentates. Between the possessions of the Aldobrandeschi, Piancastagnaio was almost always the site of allotted to the noble family from the monks of the Abbey of S.Salvatore since the beginning of the year 1000. Subsequently it was claimed from the Viscounts of Campiglia and during the 13th century it became object of ulterior disputes between the cities of Siena and Orvieto.

The Orvietani gained control of the powerful fortress in the 1303 and maintained it for around fifty years. At this point they entered in the quarrel with the heirs of the Aldobrandeschi, the Orsini of Pitigliano, to       oppose the new aims of the Senese Republic. Only between the years 1415 and 1430 Siena finally succeeded to taking possession of Piancastagnaio,       that was attached to the Capitanato of Radicofani. In 17th century the settlement became a Granducal fief and finally, with the Leopoldine reforms, the chief town of the the same community.

The country town has a circular form, once had surrounding wall enclosure with alternating square towers and four gates. The walls and the gates       have been almost entirely demolished, with the exception of few lines, three towers, two with semicircular shape and the other squared, the main       city Gate beside the Rocca and other three minor Gates in the southern front of the walls: ‘Porta Romana’, ‘Porticciola’ e ‘Porta di Voltaia’.

In the highest point of the inhabited area rises still today the mighty Rocca Aldobrandesca. The construction has a square form and is endowed with tall and strongly inclined walls. From the enclosure rises two towers , the greatest, either as thickest, had functions of keep, the other, in the opposite angle,       defended the underlying gate of access to the city.

The whole complex was endowed with machicoulis and battlement, still today almost intact. The Rocca is under good condition thanks to careful work of  restoration.

THE NEW CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM OF MARCHE (ITALY) WILL KEEP A ROBERTO ALBORGHETTI LACER/ACTIONS WORK

ROBERTO ALBORGHETTI – C’E’ DEL CAOS MA CON UN PUNTO FOCALE, LACER/ACTIONS

There will be also an artwork created by Roberto Alborghetti for his “Lacer/actions” art project among the pieces that will be in permanent exhibition at the “St. Francis Contemporary Art Museum” which is  being born in Mercatello sul Metauro, a picturesque and fascinating medieval town in the centre of Italy (Marche region, in Pesaro Urbino territory).

This beautiful and praiseworthy initiative is carried out with enthusiasm by the local City Council and by Mayor Giovanni Pistola, by Pro Loco (tourism promotion association), by artist sculptor Pasquale Martini (curator of the Museum) and with the collaboration of the whole community, from families to schools, involved also in a particular campaign called “Adoption of an artwork.”

This extraordinary modern art collection (more than 150 pieces) will be kept in the ancient and medieval “St.Francis” convent now transformated in a beautiful  museum centre and a reference point for art and culture. The opening of “St. Francis Contemporary Art Museum”is scheduled for September 2012.

Roberto Alborghetti, as all the other artists hosted in this collection devoted to modern art, was proud to donate his work accepting the invitation he received from the curator and artist Pasquale Martini and from artist Maestro Carlo Iacomucci (who is one of the exhibitors too). Martini and Iacomucci viewed some of Roberto Alborghetti Lacer/Actions – Images of Torn (publi)City –   focusing their attention on an image that, according to them, depicts  and interprets the sense of Alborghetti’s research about the “metropolitan signs of our times”. The work which will be hosted and shown at the Museum is titled “There is some chaos, but with focal point” (canvas, 63 x 43). The image was “captured” in Milan, on a cloudy day in December 2010 (this post shows it as a special preview). Roberto Alborghetti is very glad to be part of this art collection gathering national and international artists who are developing new forms and expressions about contemporary art.

THE POSTER KING: LONDON CELEBRATES EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER’S VISUAL ART

 A fascinating exhibition taking place in London up to December 18, 2011, at The Estorick Collection of modern italian art.

 

My “Lacer/actions” art project is based on torn posters details. During my research I collected so far more than 30.000 images of ripped publicity posters. I work on them, making canvas, lithographs, textile designs, videoclip a.s.o; I explained my activity on a booklet-portfolio, published in 2009 (Lacer/actions – Pics of torn (publi)city). Yes, I like the world of posters, billboards and urban “signs” (this blog is here to demonstrate it). So, I must to dedicate a post to the interesting and fascinating exhibition taking place in London, at The Estorick Collection of modern italian art ( 39a Canonbury Square, entrance in Canonbury Road). The show – opened till December 18, 2011 – pays a tribute to Edward McKnight Kauffer, the “Poster King” (this is also the exhibition theme).

Focusing on Kauffer’s time in England , The Poster King is a celebration of the ways in which this remarkable artistic émigré enriched the visual culture. And all the design expressions of our times. In addition to the renowned graphic work it includes a fascinating nucleus of lesser-known paintings and prints as well as a selection of photographs, working drawings and original designs.

Edward Mcknight Kauffer produced some of the most iconic and influential commercial imagery of the early twentieth century. A remarkably versatile artist, his work drew inspiration from a wide variety of styles ranging from Japanese art to Fauvism, Vorticism and Constructivism, and encompassed painting, applied art, interior design and scenography. Yet it remains his celebrated posters created for clients such as London Underground and Shell during the inter-war years for which he remains most famous. Kauffer’s pioneering work in the field of graphic design ranks alongside the achievements of fellow avant-garde figures such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and Wyndham Lewis, all of whom – like Kauffer- had roots in the United States yet established their careers in London.

 Born in Montana in 1890, Kauffer’s precocious artistic talents were first employed painting stage scenery at his local opera house. They were also recognised by an acquaintance named Joseph E. Mcknight, a professor at the University of Utah, who in 1912 paid for Kauffer ton pursue his studies in Paris. As a mark of gratitude, Kauffer subsequently incorporated his benefactor’s surname into his own. Upon the outbreak of the First World War Kauffer fled to England where in 1915 he received a commission to design publicity posters for the Underground.

 

The originality and vibrancy of these images led Kauffer to receive commissions from a variety of companies and publishing houses over the following two decades,including Fortnum & Mason, Lund Humphries and Chrysler Motors. With a finger on the pulse of the latest artistic trends, Kauffer’s special genius lay in his ability to adapt the language of the avant-garde to the needs of advertising, creating works that were not simply visually striking but also rich in artistic merit. With commissions increasingly scarce following the declaration of war in 1939 Kauffer made the painful decision to return to America, where he continued to work for a number of years prior to his death in 1954.

MY LACER/ACTIONS ON SHOW AT “PARALLAX AF” IN LONDON

They are on show at “Parallax AF” at La Galleria, Royal Opera Arcade, Pall Mall (October 14,15,16, ’11). Exhibition conceived and curated by the art historian Dr Chris Barlow.

 My “lacer/actions” artworks will be on show in London, at “Parallax AF” (Wall 12, La Galleria, Royal Opera Arcade, Pall Mall) from 14 to 16 October, 2011). The exhibition ‘s curator, the art historian dr. Chris Barlow, selected three works:

  • I think that they may represent and show something about my research about the incredible world of “street signs”: the mysterious dimension of torn posters. I’ve collected more than 30.000 images. The three ones I present at “Parallax” are only a small indication about my art, that people like to call “psycho-artworks” or images that seem to come from Nowhere… During the show – private view included – I’ll be very glad to meet people and tell them something about my art.

Parallax AF is the first art fair of its kind to use new theories from art history in its approach. It showcases established and emerging international contemporary artists.

Parallax AF grew out of an international exhibition that was conceived and curated by the art historian Dr Chris Barlow. It is different from other artists fairs in that it is like a specialised exhibition. It is a serious platform for international and national artists to present their work to national and international dealers, art industry people, collectors, critics and buyers in an exhibition format underpinned with critical theory.

This also provides artists with the benefit, if they wish, to present non-commercial work, or to try out new commercial ideas, without high overhead risks often associated with other fairs.

Parallax AF held in a professional gallery space in central London. The shows are curated by a professional guest curator, having the feel of an organised exhibition, and catalogue essays are written by academics. Parallax AF aims to provide a key service in helping artists to promote and sell their work, as well as providing a platform for developing their careers and practice.

 It is loosely divided into two exhibition showcases presenting abstraction/conceptual and figurative/conceptual art. The Parallax AF takes place at La Galleria, Royal Opera Arcade, Pall Mall and is curated by Dr Chris Barlow.

Abstract/conceptual show: 14th – 16th October (Friday-Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 10am-5pm)

Figurative/conceptual show: 21st – 23rd October (Friday-Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 10am-5pm)

La Galleria is the most prestigious contemporary art space in central London and well known in the St. James’s and Mayfair arts and fashion business communities for hosting important cultural events. It is situated in the Royal Opera Arcade on Pall Mall and is opposite the Institute of Directors and Athenaeum Club. It is two minutes from the National Gallery and Trafalgar Square. The nearest tube stations are Charing Cross or Piccadilly.

Le mie “lacer/azioni” saranno in mostra a Londra, alla “Parallax AF” (“La Galleria, Royal Opera Arcade, Pall Mall) dal 14 al 16 ottobre 2011. Il curatore dell’evento, lo storico dell’arte dr. Chris Barlow, ha selezionato tre opere:

Penso che questi artworks possano raprresentare e mostrare qualcosa della mia ricerca nell’incredibile mondo dei “segni di strada”: la misteriosa dimensione dei manifesti strappati. Ho finora collezionato più di 30.000 immagini. Le tre che presento alla “Parallax” sono solo un piccolissimo indizio della mia attività nel campo dell’arte visuale, che la gente già chiama “psico-immagini” o scene che sembrano arrivare da Nessunposto… Durante la mostra sarò lieto di incontrare il pubblico per uno scambio di idee sulla mia attività artistica.

Parallax AF è nata da una mostra internazionale chiamata “Parallax” che fu concepita e allestita dallo storico dell’arte Dr Chris Barlow. Parallax AF è la prima fiera dell’arte ad usare nuove tecniche d’approccio all’espressione artistica. Le sue “vetrine” annuali consentono agli artisti internazionali di emergere, offrendo una grande visibilità.

Parallax AF è diversa dalle altre mostre perchè è specializzata: è una vera e propria piattaforma per gli artisti nazionali ed internazionali che permette loro di presentare i propri lavori ai galleristi nazionali ed internazionali, agli industriali, ai collezionisti, ai critici e ai compratori.
