EXPLORING EINDHOVEN, THE HEARTLAND OF DUTCH DESIGN AND MODERN ARCHITECTURE

Welcome to Eindhoven, the heart of the southern Netherlands. Once an industrial centre for the country, Eindhoven has reinvented itself as the hip and stylish design capital and became a centre of innovation. There’s much to discover in Eindhoven, so let the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands surprise you!

The city is fairly compact, so a walking or bike tour would be the best way to take in the sights. The best place to start any sort of tour of Eindhoven is the Markt, which lies south of the main train station. This is the heart of the city, and the pedestrian-only streets surrounding it from the city centre.

If you had south through shopping street Rechtestraat, you will end up at the Catharinaplein with the impressive St. Catherine’s Church. That hallowed site marks the start of Stratumseid see Nightlife. Continuing south, you will cross the Dommel River, which offers plenty of riverside paths as well as green areas.

Eindhoven is the heartland of Dutch design. The internationally renowned Design Academy draws students from all over the country and the world, and the annual October “Dutch Design Week” is synonymous with the city. Places like Onomatopee and Yksi have regular exhibitions and projects on design while Design Daily’s and many other shops have Dutch Design available for sale. But there’s much more to Eindhoven than just design.

Contemporary art lovers will love a visit to the Van Abbemuseum, which hosts temporary collections of Dutch and foreign artists. Other art spots include the Temporary Art Centre and MU. The Philips museum shows how this Eindhoven company evolved from a small lamp manufacturer into a large multinational and the recently opened PSV Museum shows the present and the past of the 100 year old soccer club. DAF Museum is an interesting stop for both adults and kids, featuring 120 historic cars on display. This truck company is one of the few automotive brands originating from the Netherlands. With this Guide you get a €2 discount on the entry fee. Finally, if the kids are into exploring even more, plan a trip De Ontdekfabriek. In this former factory, kids can come up with their own technological inventions.

DRAWINGS FOR PLANTS: 4.000 WORKS FROM ITALIAN STUDENTS ABOUT THE WONDERFUL “PLANET OF FLOWERS AND TREES”

In 2013 Flower Council Holland and Okay! review launched in Italy the 3nd edition of “The Plant I Like” with the goal to reach new generations speaking them about the world of plants and indoor plants, improving knowledges and informations. Kids from infant to secondary schools were involved in a graphic contest about green. Schools were invited to draw plants in every technique, expressing their creativity and imagination… “The Plant I Like” outcome was better than expected. Students sent to promoters more than 4.000 drawings, confirming that the invitation launched by Okay! and Flower CouncilHolland has turned into an opportunity to look around, discover and learn about the wonderful world of plants which  offer color, comfort, serenity and well-being, to people, to environment and to homes. A commission, composed by teachers and educators, selected the best drawings. The schools received a special gift: an incredible plant named “Glowing Star in the Dark” made in Holland by Amigo Plant (http://www.glowingstarinthedark.info/). This plant shines its light through the dark nights; during the day, or in artificial light, this unusual plant stores up the surrounding light, so it can radiate a lovely glow in the dark.

The best drawings were shown during a special event which took place with a huge students participation. Green culture is one of the privileged fields of Okay! magazine. In the last 14 years, with the collaboration of Flower Council Holland, activities were promoted to create new attention and interest in young people. Thousand of kids  approached the world of flowers and plants, receiving impulse to consider the importance of green for social life and for personal well-being. And now, with these thousand of drawings, we may look at the plants through the eyes and the ears of children. But also plants have eyes and ears. Those of children.

IN ROME SPECTACULAR DUTCH FLORAL ART, FASHION & DESIGN: CLOTHES CREATED WITH FRESH ORANGE FLOWERS FOR THE NEW KING OF THE NETHERLANDS

The Queen of Holland, Beatrice, on April 30, abdicated in favor of his son, the future King William Alexander. The traditional national holiday became the occasion for a series of initiatives in and outside the Netherlands. In order to involve the citizens of Rome to Dutch festivity, the Embassy of the Netherlands, in collaboration with “Roma Capitale” and Holland Flower Council  organized a compelling “Orange Flowers Festival”. Rome celebrated the new Dutch King William Alexander with a colorful ceremony which took place on Capitol Hill. Two models dressed in clothes entirely composed of fresh flowers offered to the Mayor of Rome a sparkling and unique flower arrangement consisting of different types of orange flowers.The event served to highlight two areas of excellence of Dutch economy: floriculture and fashion & design.

ROME: 40,000 FLOWERS FROM HOLLAND FOR ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SQUARES IN THE WORLD

Truly spectacular, this year, the floral decoration of St. Peter’s Square in Rome on the occasion of the Easter celebrations, on Sunday March 31. For the 28th consecutive year Flower Council of Holland created the impressive floral show to welcome the new Pope Francesco. The varieties most represented were white roses (3,000), daffodils (10,000 more than 6000 different colors yellow) and lilies (600). And, of course, the inevitable tulips in 20,000 various shades. A total of about 40,000 between plants, flowering branches and cut flowers were used to decorate St. Peter’s Square, the staircase and the central loggia. This  tradition began in 1985. And also on the last Sunday, skilled hands and great creativity celebrated one of the most famous squares in the world.

Kids from infant to secondary schools were involved in a graphic research about green. Okay! magazine, in special pages, presented informations and news, describing some popular indoor plants. School were invited to draw plants in every techniques, expressing their creativity and imagination…

With the aim to improve the students participation Okay! magazine gave also attention to Dutch grocers scene. In special pages, the review introduced news and experiences about Holland plants production. Producers were interviewed about their work and experiences (the questions were collected among a students focus group).

The Plant I like” outcome was better than expected. “GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDCHILDREN”: IN ITALY AN INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL FOR ALL EUROPEAN FILM MAKERS

 

On the wake of the success of national writing techniques and short film festivals for the Schools “Unknown Pens & Videos” and of the experience of the competition “A tree for the grandchildren – Grandparents Day the OSA onlus Association, Abbadia San Salvatore (Siena,Italy) presents the first edition of the international short film festival NONNIcorti , an open competition for all Italian and European film makers on the theme of “Grandparents & Grandchildren”, promoted by the Association OSA-ONLUS in collaboration with Plant Publicity Holland and Colonnetti Foundation (Turin), Municipality of Abbadia San Salvatore, the Province of Siena Administration and OKAY! magazine.

The theme is in fact the sole condition for participation: it is a show of short films on the figure of the “grandparents”:

  • the relationship between generations,

  • the cultural and social change between generations,

  • the “life pills” to teach and to hand down to “grandchildren”,

  • the figure of the aged people in the family and in the community,

  • to redeem the value of Grandparents, to spread social and cultural messages, natural holders, to share their experiences, keeping them as a treasure and transferring them to new generations.

The short film was chosen (maximum length 15 minutes) as a form of expression to continue the link with the cultural experiences previously promoted by OSA Association, which were award-winning, both for the interest shown by the public and for the number of competitors on the whole national territory.

The short film is thus the “fil rouge” connecting the existing cultural initiatives with the new born NONNIcorti. The form of the short film was chosen for its nature of “immediate message”, for its short language, for its synthetic features, for its relatively easy production, without excessive use of money and resources, for its shortness, which makes it very usable by everybody.

The competition will take place from 15 to 20 (day of prize-giving) October 2012 in Abbadia San Salvatore (Siena, Italy).

There will be: COMMISSION award selected by local and national experts and professionals; GRANDPARENTS award selected by some grandfathers, also elderly members of the Centre “L’Incontro” in Abbadia S. S.; GRANDCHILDREN award selected by the students of the Secondary School of Abbadia S.S. ; ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK award selected by international experts and professionals

The artworks must be submitted by 30th June 2012 to OSA ONLUS Casella Postale 35 – Abbadia San Salvatore (Siena). They will be archived at the Municipal VideoCentre of Abbadia San Salvatore, in the VIDEO-MEMORY Section. The competition announcement can be found in the website www.pennesconosciute.it

MY ART GALLERY? IT’S ALONG AMSTERDAM STREETS

I been recently in Holland. I travelled along the country, from Brabant region to Amsterdam. I love the dutch landscapes, they’re so relaxing… I saw obviously  torn posters and other urban signs that I like to catch and to document for my “Lacer/actions” art project. It happened in Eindhoven, Utrecht and Leiden. And also along Amsterdam streets and canals I captured lot of images, absolutely realistic, as all the others 35.000 pics I collected so far.

I think the beautiful dutch city reveals itself also through ripped poster and ads you may see in hidden corners. You have only to keep up your attention and perception… I gathered interesting and capturing imageries that are really part of colors, shapes and moods of the so called “Venice of Northern Europe”.

So, here some of my artworks comin’ from my personal open air art gallery that I discovered and managed along Amsterdam streets. With a special series of other 6 images I’ve also created a videoclip – “Light (de)signs” – with the fascinating sound of Jap Jap, an Amsterdam based composer, musician, producer and performer (link below).
